New books: Deep Down With Dennis Brown

I recently picked up two books that’ll fit the topics here: the Soul Jazz-released “Dancehall – the rise of Jamaican dancehall culture” by Beth Lesser and Penny Reel’s “Deep Down With Dennis Brown”.
Lesser’s new one sure looks fantastic (more about that in a later post), but I’d heard a lot of good about Reel’s D. [...]

Ken Boothe – Peace Time. From the “Jack Ruby Hifi” album. Heavy sounding stuff with uplifting lyrics.
Lexxus – Monkey’s Out. Old cut on the Britney Spears-sampling “Virus” riddim. This is my cat’s favorite dancehall song. Those monkey noises drives her crazy.

Sting 2008

Alright, a new year of course means another Sting clash. This time the main showdown was between Movado and Vybz Kartel, and it seems to have become the most talked-about Sting session since Merciless’ classic win against Ninjaman, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man back in 2000.
